USATF LEVEL 1
RRCA-CERTIFIED MARATHON COACH
Jan graduated with an Associates Degree as a Physical Therapist Assistant from Morton College in IL in 2000. In her 10 years as a practicing clinician, she has worked in multiple settings, with extensive experience in sports medicine. This experience has given Jan an in-depth knowledge of running related injuries, including methods to help reduce risk of injury and injury management.
Jan has been an avid runner for over 15 years. She has raced competitively in many distances from 5k to full marathons, trail races, and 200 mile ultra relays. While Jan competed briefly in several triathlons up to Olympic distance, her true passion is running. Jan received her Level 1 coaching certification from USA Track & Field (USATF) and is also a certified marathon coach through Road Runners Club of America (RRCA). Before launching Howard Performance, Jan served as head coach and director of Foothills Sports Medicine/FAST Running Group for 7 years, coaching runners of all abilities training for their first race or their personal best, from 5k to the full 26.2 and beyond.
Jan resides in North Phoenix with her husband Doug, son Dylan, and four-legged running partner Axl. Jan’s passion for running has transcended into a desire to share that knowledge and experience to help others achieve their goals as well. Her philosophy of “Train Smarter, Not Harder,” as well as integration of HR training into her athletes’ plans, has helped many to make running and endurance sports a lifelong pursuit through motivation, inspiration, and a science-based approach to training that emphasizes proper development and periodization-style training for injury-free success!
